UK pick: Edinburgh
Walkable Old Town, dozens of decent pubs in five minutes, plenty of daytime activities, and trains from most of the country. Avoid August (festival prices triple).
UK pick: Manchester
Best value of the big northern cities. Northern Quarter for food and pubs, Deansgate for clubs, an Airbnb sleeping 10 for under £100 a head if you book ahead.
Europe pick: Krakow
Still the best value in Europe for what you get. £2 pints, walkable Old Town, every activity you can think of, and flights from most UK airports under £100 return if you book early.
Europe pick: Porto
The newer entry. Cheaper than Lisbon, smaller (so you'll all stay together), brilliant food, and a 2-hour flight. Better September–November when it's not boiling.
Europe pick: Riga
Under-the-radar but well set up for stags — compact centre, English widely spoken, accommodation is cheap, flights via Ryanair from a few UK airports. Cold in winter, excellent April–September.
